Save Higher Ed in Michigan: Our state budget fight is not over! The fiscal year ended September 30, 2009 with an interim budget and uncertainty about more permanent spending cuts. The proposal on the table calls for $1.2 billion in cuts to the budget including all levels of education—from pre-school to university—and eliminating work-study programs and the “Michigan Promise” scholarship program, which will impact many Wayne State students. Some legislators are claiming they will “cut, then adjust”—sort of a “check’s in the mail” approach to the budget crisis. This is dangerous and irresponsible and will not solve Michigan’s budget crisis. Our elected officials need to make some tough decisions about how to balance Michigan’s FY 2010 budget before the one-month continuing budget runs out. Governor Granholm plans to veto key cuts to the budget and has called on the public to join her in pressuring the legislature to find the money to protect our state’s future and maintain our education system. We cannot solve the budget crisis with cuts alone—we need to look for revenue-generating policies as well. Contact your Representative and Senator:
