Family Medical Leave Act

The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) provides additional benefits and protections beyond those negotiated into the contract. The Act “entitles” eligible employees to take time off totaling 12 weeks a year for maternity/paternity leave as well as time off for pre-natal doctor visits and to care for a parent, spouse or child with a serious health condition. FMLA covered absences cannot be used as a negative factor in employment decisions or evaluations, including selective salary and annual reviews.

Before choosing whether to take FMLA or another form of leave, don’t hesitate to contact the Union office for advice about your options.
